Do you think Email Addresses are Case-Sensitive?

Case sensitivity usually means the way of representing the text in uppercase, lowercase and mixed case. For example, the word “techvile” can be represented in the following ways, “Techvile”, “techVile”, “TECHvile”, “TECHVILE”, etc.,

So the thing is, do you think these ways of representing a mail are pointing to different mailboxes? Or the mails are one and the same and have the same mailboxes irrespective of the case it is mentioned.

In this article, let us explain to you the concept of how mail servers work and whether they have case sensitivity for their mail identifiers.

Let us consider an example of the mail user@techvile.in represented in three forms,

  • User@techvile.in
  • user@techvile.in
  • USER@techvile.in

Short Answer:

In short, the email addresses are not case-sensitive.

All the emails in the example point to the same mailbox and the word “user” in all forms point to a base mail with lower case.

Long Answer:

The domain names are always not case-sensitive or case-insensitive as these are rules framed by the ICANN for managing the domain names in the www directory.

So the part of @domain.extension remains case insensitive. As for our example, “______@techvile.in” is case-insensitive.

So let’s come to the username part which lies before the @ symbol. When you ask me whether the username part of the email is case sensitive or not, my answer would be, it depends on the server setup.

The 90% of the emails are from the most common email providers like Google, Outlook, Yahoo, AppleID and ProtonMail as per the article on Litmus. So these providers keep the email usernames case insensitive.

It is found that large companies that incorporate thousands of employees provide official emails to their employees. so the probability is higher to have employees having the same first names, etc.,

So, these companies have case-sensitivity for their emails to differentiate the users inside the organization.

However, it increases the complexity of the usernames in the email addresses and increases incompatibility when integrating with other apps.

But for the most part, the major email providers do not incorporate the case sensitivity for their emails to reduce complexity and it is better to assume that all emails are case insensitive until you are hired by companies those do that.

We hope you find this informative and thanks for spending time here.

Cheers!
